UPDATE: Memorial Bridge, Rickerby Park repair works commence during August

**Contrary to an earlier, work will not commence on this project this week.  A confirmed start date will be issued as soon as possible**

Memorial Footbridge in Carlisle was closed on 9 June 2017 as a precautionary measure, following a structural assessment that identified the need to strengthen a number of key elements of the bridge.   Penrith-based contractors Metcalfe Civil Engineering have been appointed as the Principal Contractor to undertake the strengthening works.

The footbridge is a suspension type structure which requires special care to be taken during repair works to ensure that the bridge remains stable at all times.  Work to four key joints in the suspended central part of the bridge will require this section to be raised to gain access to them, which will be strengthened before lowering back into place and bolting back together.

Strengthening of the four anchors at each end of the bridge, as well as some of the main structural steelwork is also necessary to return the structure to a safe condition.  Fabrication of the steelwork commenced on 19 July 2017 to ensure commencement on site in early August.   The works are expected to take approximately 3 months to complete, with the bridge due to fully re-open in November 2017. The total cost of the repair works to the bridge will be approximately £300,000.

Memorial Footbridge remains a historic part of Carlisle’s fabric, erected in Rickerby Park and acquired for the public through the efforts of the Carlisle Citizens League in memory of those who gave their lives in the Great War of 1914-18. It was opened on 25 May 1922, with the bridge subsequently forming part of the Hadrian’s Cycleway, and National Cycle Network route 72 (from Ravenglass to South Shields).  Diversions are in place via Eden Bridge, 1km to the West (downstream) of the bridge.

Consultation has been undertaken with the organisers for the Great Cumbrian Run which is being held on the 1 October 2017, who have confirmed that the planned route will be amended to avoid the closed bridge.
