BMX stunt show for Big Pedal winners

One of the ‘spot prize’ winners of the 2018 Big Pedal Challenge - supported by Cumbria County Council’s Active Travel team, will be enjoying their prize at a special event on Thursday 15 November.

Pupils from Bransty Primary School in Whitehaven were one of the ‘spot prize’ winners of this year’s Big Pedal Challenge - a national scheme which promotes cycling and scooting to school.

The school children will be entertained on Friday 12 October by a special BMX stunt show, with professional BMX rider Matti Hemmings to give a dazzling display at 1pm in the school hall. The stunt show includes a variety of tricks and positive messages on safe cycling, the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the benefits of hard work and dedication.

Commenting on the prize, class teacher Charlotte Mullen, said:

“We’re all very excited about the BMX stunt show - the children were so enthusiastic about taking part in The Big Pedal and we’re all delighted to have won one of the prizes!  Promoting an active and healthy lifestyle is a key priority here at Bransty Primary, and this prize shows how much our pupils are learning and enjoying their work.  We can’t wait for the 2019 Big Pedal!”

Cllr Keith Little, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:

““The Big Pedal is a great way for families to think about ways of getting to school without using the car. Schools in Cumbria recognise the value of this annual challenge, which encourages active travel and is good for the environment, and it’s fantastic news to see Bransty Primary among the prize winners - I hope they enjoy the stunt show!”

This year 42 Cumbrian schools clocked up more than 22,000 cycling and scooting journeys during the Big Pedal fortnight.  The Big Pedal is organised by Sustrans, a national sustainable travel charity, supported locally by Cumbria County Council’s Active Travel team.  Other winners in Cumbria included Beetham Primary School (winners of a £100 Brightkidz voucher), Inglewood Infants School in Carlisle (receiving a fabulous ‘scooter island’ for storing scooters and bikes), and Solway Community College (winning a trip to the National Cycling Centre earlier in the summer).
