Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service recruiting apprentice firefighters

Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) is recruiting four firefighter apprentices to be based countywide.

CFRS is seeking people who want to work within their community to improve safety awareness, help protect the public and promote fire safety.

Applicants undergo a rigorous selection process, including written and physical fitness tests, and successful candidates undertake an extensive training programme starting in February 2019.

Our apprentices receive full training in the role of a professional firefighter and after successfully completing this training they then work alongside firefighter crews throughout the county.

CFRS has recruited a number of firefighter apprentices in recent years and the vast majority have gone on to secure permanent full-time jobs, either as firefighters within CFRS or with other employers in the county.

CFRS Station Manager Roger Exley said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity to join Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and receive full training to carry out the work of a firefighter. We are fully committed to our apprenticeship programme and offer a career path that can often lead to a permanent full-time firefighter role.”

Applications must be made via the county council’s website at cumbria.gov.uk. Applications for operational firefighter apprenticeships close on Monday 8 October.

You can find out more about the job role at one of our presentation nights:

  • Monday 17 September - Workington Fire Station
  • Tuesday 18 September - Carlisle East Community Fire Station
  • Thursday 20 September - Kendal Fire Station

All sessions will start at 6pm prompt and will last around an hour.

We have arranged training sessions to give you an opportunity to test your fitness levels in preparation for the selection tests and to receive advice and guidance from the fitness team at:
