One lane restriction on Holbeck Bridge A591 - update

Following a routine assessment of Holbeck Bridge on the A591 yesterday, significant deterioration to a concrete slab on the northbound lane has been identified.  The effect of this is a reduced load-carrying capacity on the northbound lane.

In order to make preparations for repair and resurfacing, a one-lane closure under traffic light control has been implemented on the A591 over the bridge to ensure the safety of the travelling public and to avoid further damage to the weakened section.

This will move traffic towards the centre of the road so that vehicles are no longer driving over the weakened area.

Highways teams on-site are proactively managing traffic. This will be closely monitored and we are aware of the peak times for traffic on this route, particularly late in the afternoon, and will make every effort to reduce delays and disruption.

The one-lane restriction will provide a working width to allow temporary highway widening works to take place in the southbound verge. Once the southbound verge has been re-surfaced, two-way traffic will be reinstated, although the lanes will be narrower over the bridge.

Work is now progressing with the temporary widening which we are aiming to complete as soon as we can, at which point the traffic lights can be removed.

The council apologises for any disruption or delays this may cause.  Please plan extra time for journeys and check to see if there is an alternative route.
