Cumbria’s Children’s Services have made sustained improvements and are now working well according the latest inspection report from Ofsted, published today.

Inspectors visited the council for a two-day short, focussed, inspection during August. They looked at how the service managed referrals, the effectiveness of child protection work, the approach to helping families at the earliest opportunity and the response to 16- and 17-year-olds who present as homeless.

Unlike previous inspections of Children’s Services, an inspection of this type does not result in a single judgement. Rather Ofsted highlight areas of strength and areas where further work is needed.

Inspectors highlighted:

  • the “quick and appropriate” response to safeguarding concerns and Early Help requests;
  • the “well-embedded” and influential approach to social work practice;
  • the positive engagement with parents and families to support them to address issues of concern; and
  • the effective oversight and management of senior leaders.

While the overall findings are very positive, Ofsted do highlight some areas for improvement. These related to:

  • workforce stability in the teams in the west of the county
  • how children’s identity needs are included in assessments
  • how we respond to young people who present as homeless
  • ensuring actions from audits are completed in a timely way

Action is already underway to address all of these areas.

Cllr Anne Burns, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:

“I’m delighted that Ofsted have recognised the continued improvement of our Children’s Services. This report is overwhelmingly positive and underlines the huge progress we have made over recent years. It is testament to the dedication and skill of our Children’s Services staff, who I know always strive to provide the best possible services to children and young people.

“We understand the areas for improvement and have plans in place. They are discrete issues and I am very confident we will address them.

“Our Children’s Services really have been on a journey and it is fantastic to see how well our teams have responded to the challenge.”
